Common Windows Registration Problems and Solutions

Here is a list of solutions to some typical problems Stony Brook students encounter when they attempt to register a Windows computer and gain Internet access at the start of each semester.

PROBLEM: The Client Assessment Tool (CAT) tells you that you need to install the latest Microsoft Updates, but you can't get to the Microsoft site to access them.

SOLUTION: Make sure you have "Automatic detect settings" selected in Internet Explorer. Here's how you do it:

  • In Internet Explorer, go to Tools
  • Select Internet Options
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on LAN Settings (in the bottom right)
  • Make sure the "Automatically detect settings" box is checked
  • Click OK

You should now be able to go to Microsoft for updates

PROBLEM: "Can't Write to Log" Error

SOLUTION: Restart your computer and run the Client Assessment Tool (CAT) again.

PROBLEM: You forgot your NetID and NetID password or never established a NetID password in SOLAR.

SOLUTION: Go to the SOLAR System and click on the NetID Maintenance link to find out what your NetID is and to establish or change your NetID password.

PROBLEM: CAT says you need to update Windows Defender dat file on Windows Vista.

SOLUTION: Turn Windows Defender on from your Control Panel. Once Windows Defender is turned on, click "Check for Updates," then run the CAT scan again.

PROBLEM: CAT says you need to "Uninstall Internet Connection Sharing."

SOLUTION: To correct this problem in Vista, follow these directions:

  • Go to your Start menu
  • Click on Network
  • Select the Network and Sharing Center tab at the top of the window
  • Click Manage network connections on the left
  • Right click on Wireless Network Connection under LAN or High-Speed Internet
  • Select Properties
  • Click on the Sharing tab
  • Uncheck the box that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection."
  • Hit OK
  • Go to CAT and hit Scan again

To correct this problem with Windows XP, follow these steps:

  • Go to your Start menu
  • Select Connect to > Show all connections
  • Under LAN or High-Speed Internet, right click on Wireless Network Connection
  • Select Properties
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection."
  • Hit OK
  • Go back to CAT and hit Scan again
