Phishing

To the Campus Community:

Please be advised that no one in The Division of Information Technology or anyone else on campus will ever request you to provide your user ID, password, etc. via e-mail. Please be alert to phishing and scamming e-mails and do not respond to them.

It has come to our attention that an e-mail is being sent to the campus requesting the user for their e-mail address, password, etc. The partial text is included below:

“Dear Subscriber,

This mail is to inform all our {.EDU} users that we will be upgrading our site in a couple of days from now, So you as a Subscriber of our site, you are required to send us your Email account details so as to enable us know if you are still making use of your mail box. Further be informed that we will be deleting all mail account that is not functioning so as to create more space for our new users. So you are to send us your mail account details which are as follows:

*User name:”

Any time you see a request for this information, even if it appears to come from the campus e-mail, you should do the following:

1. Forward the message to abuse@stonybrook.edu

2. Move it to the junk mail folder for further forsensic analysis. Do not follow any instructions contained in the message.
