Do Not Fall for Latest E-Mail Scam


E-Mail Scam

An e-mail message was recently sent to the campus community requesting users to submit their Webmail username and passwords. The subject of the message is FINAL WARNING! and the text of the message is included below:

Attn: Students/Staff,

We notice that your webmail account has been compromised by spammers. They have gained access to your webmail account and have been using it for illegal internet activities. You are to send us your account information immediately to enable us to reset your account. A new password will be sent to you once this is done. Send the information as follows

*User Name:
*Password:
*Alternate email:

You are advised to send this information immediately or we will delete your account from our network.

Please be advised that no one in the Division of Information Technology or anyone else on campus will ever request you to provide your user id, password, etc. via e-mail. Please be alert to phishing and scamming e-mails and do not respond to them.

Any time you see a request for this information, even if it appears to come from the campus e-mail, you should do the following:

  1. Forward the message to abuse@stonybrook.edu
  2. Move it to the junk mail folder for further forensic analysis. Do not follow any instructions contained in the message.
