Guest Wireless Access (GuestNet)

Guests visiting Stony Brook's West Campus, Southampton, or Manhattan campuses can wirelessly connect to the Internet through GuestNet. GuestNet is a wireless network specifically designed for invited guests of the University participating in conferences, seminars, workshops, or research initiatives.

How to Request a Guest Account

All guest accounts require a userID and password in order to connect. These accounts are temporary and only last the length of the campus visit. Any department hosting an event or inviting guests to campus may request guest accounts by sending an e-mail to the Department of Telecommunications and Networking (TeLNeT) at telnet@notes.cc.sunysb.edu. Requests must be made during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and at least 48 hours in advance.

TeLNeT provides the University sponsor (host) with case-sensitive userIDs and passwords. It is the responsibility of the host to communicate this information to their guests.

Operating Parameters

Users should be aware of the following operating parameters when connecting to GuestNet:

  • Does not allow for AIM or ICQ instant messaging
  • Does not allow for file transfer protocol (FTP)
  • Connection will be lost if idle for 20-straight minutes
  • Connection times out after two hours (120 minutes) even if you are continuously working
